Bio & Photography Experience
With 14 years of experience, I specialize in portrait photography. I have lived in Japan for 13 years, and know a lot about the area of Kyoto, and the rest of Japan. My portfolio consists of portrait shots of all kinds, from families, groups, proposals, engagements, travel shots, couples and solo. I also have experience doing photoshoots for breweries, books, bars, restaurants, Airbnb properties and more.
I always do my utmost to create a memorable experience, with great quality photos that you can be happy to look back on for decades. I try to be as flexible as possible, if weather or unexpected things happen, and times and days need to be adjusted. On top of providing a great photoshoot experience, I try to give some history, or information about the area. I'm always happy to talk about anything related to Japan.
My names Hugh. I am originally from the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland. I moved to Japan in January 2012 and have since lived in Osaka, Tokyo, and Kyoto. I am a family man, with a wife and little girl. I'm good with kids and love animals. When I am not working as a photographer, I do part time work as a lecturer at two universities here in Kyoto. My passions in life besides photography, and spending time with my family are - Traveling, eating out, watching 80s movies, and indulging in craft beer.
This was such a great experience for my wife and I as we had photos taken in Gion. Hugh was such a patient and easy to work with professional that had captured stunning photos for us. Not only did we have out photos taken, but he guided us around the town for amazing shots and positions. We love the results and will be able to cherish our time in Kyoto thanks to him. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a photographer to capture your moment in Kyoto.

Hugh was awesome! We booked this experience for our honeymoon - it’s so difficult to get nice photos together when traveling with only two people. We also wanted to book an experience with a local that could give us a lay of the land and some stories/history about the area. With Hugh we got a two for one special - a talented photographer and an amazing tour guide! He knew just how to get the perfect shot - making it look like we were the only people at the temple despite so many tourists in the area. He also knew of some off the beaten path locations that he guided us to that made for an incredible experience and some awesome shots. Hugh is awesome and I would 100% book with him again the next time I’m looking for a photographer in Kyoto!
